I remember growing up in the 90s having some of the cool stuff — Nintendo, Game & Watch, a few RC toys, and eventually a PS1 when I hit my early teenage years.

I loved having cool techy stuff as a kid. Thirty-odd years later, not much has changed. I’m still into the cool stuff because who isn’t?

So while others are already flexing their iPhone 17 Pro Max, I got myself the coolest Christmas present of 2025 — an Ozito cordless hedge trimmer.

Let me tell you why you should choose an Ozito hedge trimmer over the new iPhone 17:

One, it’s $89 from Bunnings versus about $2,000.
Two, you could probably fight zombies with it in a post-apocalyptic scenario.

But you already know that. So let’s focus on this little bad boy — the latest addition to my Aussie Dad starter pack.

Battery Hedge Trimmer vs Petrol – Is It Any Good?

Hedge trimmers, like lawn mowers, were traditionally petrol powered. This one is battery operated, so you’d be fair to question whether it has enough power.

Short answer: for my use case, yes — easily.

But first, here’s why I needed one in the first place.

Why I Needed a Hedge Trimmer

After about six years in our home, I finally decided to plant some pittosporum to create a boundary between us and the neighbours.

At first, hedge shears (those giant garden scissors) did the job just fine. But now the hedge has:

  • reached the maximum height I want
  • thickened up nicely
  • become much harder to keep straight with scissors alone

Getting a clean, even hedge with hand tools had turned into a proper chore.

At this point I knew it was time for an upgrade.

What’s in the Box

This Ozito hedge trimmer is sold as a “skin”, meaning:

  • no battery
  • no charger

That’s fine if you already own other Ozito tools (which I do). If not, you’ll need to factor that into the cost.

Apart from that, there’s not much else in the box — and honestly, that’s all you need.

The Test – Is It Sharp and Powerful Enough?

This was the only real question.

For my pittosporum hedge, the answer was a definite yes.

You know how they say a katana “cuts like butter”? That’s what it felt like. Clean cuts, no snagging, no forcing it through branches.

Here’s what stood out:

Lightweight – I didn’t put it on the scales, but it feels very manageable and doesn’t wreck your arms.
Quiet – Petrol trimmers aren’t outrageously loud, but this is noticeably quieter.
Easy to control – Getting a straight, even line is much easier compared to hedge shears.

Results

Here are some “after’ photos of my pittosporum.

Here’s my Coprosma hedge. This one has bigger twigs but surprisingly easier to trim.

This is where battery hedge trimmers really shine for small to medium hedges.

Final Thoughts – Is the Ozito Cordless Hedge Trimmer Worth It?

For small, regularly maintained hedges, the Ozito battery hedge trimmer is excellent.

Would I use it on a massive, overgrown jungle? Probably not.

But for use cases like mine — a young pittosporum hedge that’s trimmed often and doesn’t have thick branches yet — this thing is perfect.

Most importantly:

  • it gets the job done quicker than hedge shears
  • it doesn’t break the bank
  • it doesn’t break the back (my millennial back)

Will it last long? Only time will tell.

That said, my very first Ozito tool was a corded electric lawn mower, and in the nine years I owned it, it never really stopped working — I just wanted a new mower.

Based on that track record, I’ve got high hopes for this one.
